Was the wind as strong as other times for the event? What kind of kites were being flown in strong winds? How was the event held? Round Robin, double elimination, single elimination? 5pt. rounds all under? As you might guess I want to be there in Tulsa next year. We started flying fighters here in Silver City when the wind was too light for our heavy stunters. It became more and more fun that now I usually fly stunters only when nobody will fight with me. We were fighting today in 25-30 mph winds with small hatas with double bows.. My latest kite had a double bow in the center 2/3 and I filed down the diameter of the tips. Didn't really know what I was doing but it flew pretty good on a day when it is usually hard to make a fighter turn at all. What do others fight in strong winds? Ok, The wind slacked of a bit at the time of the fighter competition. It was still pretty stiff (I don't do MPH). Fighters are my favorite kite, but when it gets that windy I've got plenty of other kites to play with. But, you have to play the hand you're dealt. > What kind of kites were being flown in strong winds? I flew a Vic's Fighter slightly modified for the high wind. I taped the fibreglass cross spar to the skin to prevent blow through. I only used a single bow, although on occassion I have used two under similar circumstance. That day, that kite seemed to like one bow. I didn't argue. There were Grandmasters, Vic's, Merlin's, Schwiemann's, Butterfighters, Koreans, and assorted home builts. > How was the event held? Round Robin, double elimination, single elimination? 5pt. rounds all under? The rules were as set out in the AKA Fighter/Rok manual. Basically single elimination, touch under. Get a copy and read it. I didn't and I helped write it. I was somewhat surprised to see that under-touches were mandated for the AKA Convention, for instance. > As you might guess I want to be there in Tulsa next year. Hope to see you there. > Don't stand on your lines:-) Good advice. Also, When in doubt let the fighter do what it wants. Haunt the Kite shops and catalogs & look for various diameters of solid fiberglass spar material (6 - 10 foot lengths) the kind that delta stunters use for standoff whiskers. You can cut several of different diameters for a particular kite for different wind conditions. Also they can be ganged together. Use one full length and another at about 2/3 length. About 3cm of heat shrink tubing around both spars at each end of the short one and one or two in the middle acts much like finely tapered single spars. Some pink or purple might help. -- A.
