About Sitespector
--------------------

Sitespector - is a program that allows you to set up automatic monitoring for changes on web pages on the Internet. It checks web page content and lets you view new information that was added to the web site, visually separating it from the old information. The program can watch for updates on any number of pages of any number of web sites. Sitespector lets you set exact time when pages are to be checked, and it will automatically notify you the way you have chosen. New information that was made available on a web page can be marked by either highlighting all changes on the page or by displaying the list of changes grouped into individual paragraphs.

Sitespector's basic features:

- Convenient viewing of new web page content -
All new information found on web pages is displayed as individual issues, where new information is presented either by highlighting all changes right on the web page or by displaying the list of changes grouped into individual paragraphs. User may switch between these views and view the new information the way the user finds most convenient.

- Scheduling page checks -
The program allows you to set exact periods of time when web pages are to be checked. The scheduling allows setting various exclusions to optimize bandwidth usage and avoid checking pages at inappropriate time.

- Running web page scripts -
The program can keep an eye on changes in web pages that contain scripts that affect the page's content. User can disable running scripts for pages the user does not trust in full.

- Monitoring changes on pages with frames -
Frames are actually individual pages within a current page. The program allows to monitor changes within those pages and present those changes in the total content of the page's update.

- "Trash" filtering -
With a special option that allows ignoring images with external links, the program can exclude from the total amount of changes continually refreshing banners, counters, and other unnecessary "trash" and as well exclude paragraphs that do not contain letters (dates, time, numbers, etc.). You may filter information on a page by specific values that may include date and time masks or text constants. Such filtering allows you to disregard the "noise" in content and not consider a page updated when such changes appear on page.

- Monitoring personalized information -
The program allows to monitor data that appears on a web page according to user's settings - the so-called "personalized data" - using Microsoft Internet Explorer browser's cookies and by sending user's authentication data to server automatically.

- Convenient and easy user interface -
The program's interface was designed to be simplest, and any user can quickly get used to it. In just a few minutes the user will know of all sections and features available through the program's interface. The program's multiple-window interface allows you to view changes in web pages in individual windows and set those windows' relative positions against other windows and arrange them into groups.

- Notifications on changes found on web pages -
The program can run in background, and user may choose which way the program will notify the user when new information is found on a web page. A number of notification types may be selected: playing sound, blinking program's icon in system tray or displaying a special popup message.

- Reducing data transfer -
To reduce data transfer, the program offers a number of options that disable the program to download images off the web pages. Since while checking web pages the program automatically downloads images from web sites to user's computer, enabling this setting will help you reduce the entire network's traffic. However, in such case, all images on the page will be replaced with blank images, the so-called "placeholders", which color can be defined by user.

- Preliminary page check -
To make sure user has not made a mistake typing in a web page address, he may validate the web page's address and find out whether the address the user has entered leads to the required web page. This feature will help user set the correct address if the address he has entered navigating to the web page leads to an automatic redirect to a different page. Also, during such preliminary check the program will attempt to recognize encoding used on the page being checked and set that encoding for the channel it will create.

Installation
-------------------

Unpack the sitespector.zip file to a temporary folder and then run "installsitespector_2.02_en.exe" and follow the installation wizard's instructions.

If you are using Sitespector 1.0, you will need to install Sitespector 2.0 to the same folder where you currently have Sitespector 1.0 - in order to save your data and move it to the new version. The installation program will find that folder automatically. Next, during the installation process, the program will notify you of the previous version's channels it has found and will let you convert them to the new version. The previous version's database file will not be deleted after you have installed the new version of the program. If you no longer need the previous version's database file - delete the file "watcher3.mdb" from the "/Data Base" folder in the program's folder.

When you are done with the installation, run the program from the new group on the Start menu.
