Eddie Irvine biography from Shell-Ferrari
=========================================

One of Formula One's rising stars and most
colourful personalities, Eddie lrvine gets
his first chance in a top team with Ferrari
in 1996, following his surprise nomination
as Michael Schumacher's teammate.

The 30-year-old Ulsterman came up through
the Formula Ford, F3, and F3000 ranks with
wins in every category.

In 1987, he won two British FF1600
championships and the prestigious Formula
Ford Festival.

A season in British Formula Three brought
six second places and an outstanding
performance at the Macau F3 Grand Prix.

A difficult Formula 3000 debut in 1989 was
followed by third place in the 1990
championship with Eddie Jordan Racing.

Without the sponsorship needed to break
into Fl, lrvine found refuge in the
All-Japan F3000 championship.

In 1993, he was controversially denied the
Japanese title on a technicality. lrvine
parlayed his strong performances in Japan
- and at Le Mans for the factory Toyota
team - into a drive at the 1993 Japanese
Grand Prix.

He finished sixth, the first driver since
Jean Alesi to claim points on his Fl debut
and secured a full-time ride with Jordan
for 1994.

In two years with the team, lrvine was a
regular points scorer, with a best result
of third place in the 1995 Canadian Grand
Prix.

While his laid-back attitude has
occasionally antagonised the Fl
establishment, lrvine's forthright style,
humour, and forceful driving have already
earned him a large following among race
fans.

Eddie Irvine biography from Peugeot
===================================

Edmund Irvine was born 10 November, 1965 in
Newtonwards, Northern Ireland. In 1983, at
the age of 17, he entered his first race
with his father's Crossle FF1600.

He was an independent in the Irish and
British FF1600 championships before being
given a factory car in 1987 by Van Diemen,
with the backing of Duckhams, winning both
the RAC Championship and the Esso FF1600
Cup.

In 1988, Eddie participated in the British
Formula 3 Championship at the wheel of an
Ralt-Alfa Romeo for the West Surrey Racing
team, grabbing six second places and ending
the season as fifth-ranked driver.

At the end of the season, he entered the
Macao Grand Prix, establishing a new lap
record, leading Jean Alesi during the first
part of the race before going off the
circuit.

In 1989, Eddie graduated to Formula 3000
International with Pacific Racing, but
failed to do better than a third place
during the season.

In 1990, he joined Eddie Jordan Racing and
ranked third overall, with a victory at
Hockenheim. At the end of the season, he
returned to Macao to join the Cerumo F3000
team, racing in Japan for the next three
years. He was to win one race in each of
the seasons to end up seventh overall in
1991 and eighth in 1992.

In 1993, he was more successful, almost
winning the Japanese F 3000 championships
(accorded to Kauyoshi Hoshimo after a
controversial decision by the judges, which
resulted in Eddie losing valuable points)
and driving a Toyota factory car at
Le Mans, establishing a new lap record on
the prestigious circuit. Despite technical
problems, he managed to finish fourth in
the event.

The main event that year, however, was to
be Eddie's successful trials with Eddie
Jordan at the Estoril circuit in Portugal
and driving in the last two races of the
season for Sasol Jordan, resulting in a
tremendous sixth place at Suzuka, thus
becoming the first driver since Jean
Alesi to mark points in his Formula 1
debut.

In 1994, Eddie was hired as a full-fledged
driver by Jordan.

In his first Grand Prix of the season,
Eddie met with misfortune, suspended by the
judges for a Grand Prix after a minor
accident.

The team appealed, but the suspension was
increased to three races. Eddie was forced
to sit on the sidelines until the Spanish
Grand Prix, where he once again finished in
the points at Barcelona with a remarkable
sixth place.

The second part of the season was marked by
several interrupted races. These
disappointments were largely compensated by
Eddies incredible performance at Le Mans
where, as part of a team with Krossnoff
and Martini, the Toyota drivers managed to
grab first place at the beginning of the
race, before slipping to fourth place
following mechanical problems. During the
23rd hour, however, Irvine attacked madly
and managed to hoist the SARD Toyota team
to second place at the end of the race.
