McLaren International - David Coulthard
=======================================

27 years after the death of the legendary
Jim Clark, 22 years after the great Jackie
Stewart's third Drivers Championship title,
Scotland is once again at the forefront
of motor racing following the meteoric rise
of Twynholm's David Coulthard, who proudly
displays the blue St Andrews cross on his
helmet.

David's name first hit the headlines in
1990 when the then 19-year-old racer
received the McLaren Autosport Young Driver
of the Year Award - a coveted prize that
entitles its recipient to a drive in a
McLaren Formula One Car.

Six years on, the "Flying Scotsman" returns
to the cockpit of the red and white car as
full time race driver for Marlboro McLaren
Mercedes alongside the "Flying Finn" Mika
Hakkinen.

By the time he put on the red overalls for
the first time at the end of 1995, and with
less than two full seasons of Formula One
racing behind him, he'd already gathered
one Grand Prix win, five pole positions and
65 FIA Formula One Championship points.

Like many of his contemporaries, David
started his racing career in karting,
dominating the Scottish championships from
1983 to 1988. His first taste of single
seater racing came a year later when he
entered and won both 1989 junior Formula
F1600 championships.

He confirmed his budding talent by
finishing third in the prestigious Formula
Ford Festival at Brands Hatch - the highest
position for a junior in the history of the
Festival.

In 1990, he was chosen by Jackie Stewart to
compete with Paul Stewart Racing in the
British Vauxhall Lotus challenge. He
finished 4th and 5th respectively, despite
missing several races after breaking his
leg, and ended the year on a high note with
the testing of the Marlboro McLaren Honda
MP4/5 as part of his McLaren Autosport
Young Driver of the Year Award.

Following the traditional route, he moved
up to the British F3 Championship with
PSRin 1991, finishing runner-up to with
five victories. He also comfortably won
both the "European Marlboro Masters" and
the prestigious Macau Grand Prix.

He then graduated to F3000 in 1992, and
impressed the Benetton Formula One team
when he was given the opportunity to test
their car. He continued racing in F3000 in
1993, finishing third in the championship,
and started full time Formula One testing
duties for the Williams team.

That year, he also drove for Jaguar in the
Le Mans 24 Hour race, winning the GT class
category.

His Formula One racing breakthrough came in
the most tragic of circumstances a year
later, when the Williams team called their
test driver - David - to replace the late
Ayrton Senna from the Spanish Grand Prix
onwards. He seized this opportunity with
both hands and collected 14 championship
points in eight races - having to
relinquish the drive three races from the
end in favour of 1992 World Champion Nigel
Mansell.

He had made a big impact, though, and was
voted Scottish Sports Personality and ITV
Young Sports Personality of the Year.

Williams subsequently displayed their
confidence in his talents by preferring him
to Mansell as full time driver for the 1995
season. A bout of tonsillitis affected his
early performances, but after his operation
he bounced back to top form with a
convincing maiden victory at the Portuguese
Grand Prix in Estoril - in what was only
his 21st Formula One race.

He ended the season in style with a stream
of pole positions and podium finishes,
securing third place in the Drivers
Championship and justifying the
expectations of the motor racing observers
who'd hailed his potential for Formula One
superstardom.

David is 24, and lives in Monaco with his
girlfriend Andrea Murray.
