The man behind the Honda engines which dominated Formula
One from 1986 to1991 today exercises his talents on behalf
of the Prancing Horse.

Born in 1948, Tokyo native Goto joined Honda in 1970 as an
engineer in the exhaust systems research division, where
he participated in development of the CVCC engine, the
first unit to meet the second-generation US emission
standards.

His expertise in exhaust technology and engine testing saw
him assigned to Honda's first turbo engine project in
1981, and later the Formula Two engine programme which
marked the firm's first steps back to Grand Prix racing.

Honda entered Fl in 1984 with Goto acting as head of
engine management system development and testing. He was
promoted to Fl race team manager in 1985, leading Honda
to consecutive constructors titles in 1986, 1987, and
1988.

With the end of the turbo era, Goto assumed control of all
engine design and development, overseeing production of
the Vl0 and Vl2 engines which yielded three more
championships.

When the Japanese marque withdrew at the end of 1992, Goto
searched for a new opportunity in Fl, and initially
assisted Ferrari on a freelance basis prior to joining the
team full-time in 1994.

In addition to improving the power, efficiency, and
reliability of the Ferrari Vl2 over the last two seasons,
he has also directed the design and testing of the
marque's first-ever Vl0, to be raced in 1996.
