           David's Text Editor, Release 1.1, January 1994

                   Welcome to David's Text Editor!

David's Text Editor is a full-featured text editor for MS-DOS systems.
It should run on any DOS system, and can edit multiple files, using all
available conventional DOS RAM. The keyboard layout is rather like the
Borland "Turbo" editors, and is exactly like that used by Pegasus Mail
for DOS. The keyboard is programmable, but the tools necessary to
reprogram it will not be available until the next release of David's
Text Editor.

To install David's Text Editor, copy the files DTE.EXE and DTEHELP.EXE
somewhere on your path. The .TPL files in the archive are sample
templates for your inspection, and are not necessary to run the
program.

Aside from a comprehensive range of traditional text-editor features,
David's Text Editor has some more unusual capabilities, including:

   * Regular expression search and replace
   * Line sorting
   * Multiple buffers
   * Split-screen editing
   * Synchronized editing/scrolling
   * File encryption
   * Reformat with indent capability
   * Various word-processor-like formatting
     and text justification commands
   * Line and box drawing
   * Template editing
   * Two-level preferences
   * PostScript printing support
   * 43 and 50 line support on VGA
   * Keystroke macros

... and more. Even better, David's Text Editor is FREE SOFTWARE. Please
note this - it is NOT "shareware", nor is it "freeware" - it is fully
copyright, proprietary code which I for inscrutable reasons choose to
give away. You may use David's Text Editor in any way and for any
purpose you wish, subject only to the following two (very reasonable)
restrictions:

* You may not sell David's Text Editor, either on its own, or as
   part of any other package without the author's explicit written
   permission. The only exception to this is software libraries who
   charge only a media fee for distribution.

* You may not alter David's Text Editor in any way, even if it's
   only to translate the strings into a foreign language. I
   absolutely WILL NOT tolerate reverse-engineering or tampering
   with the code. If you absolutely MUST have an international
   language version of David's Text Editor, send me e-mail and I'll
   see what I can do.

Despite its free status, David's Text Editor is NOT unsupported. I
will periodically release updates and corrections, and welcome your
suggestions and problem reports (well, I don't really WELCOME problem
reports, but you know what I mean). To get in touch with me, send
Internet electronic mail to:

    Internet: david@pmail.gen.nz
    CompuServe: >internet:david@pmail.gen.nz

You can also fax me at +64 3 453 6612 but I cannot offer any guarantee
that you will get a reply - rest assured though, that your suggestions
and reports will be taken into account like all others.

I hope you enjoy using David's Text Editor.

Cheers!
