I turned out that telnet was unhappy with the answers it was getting from named (version 4.6), perhaps because of the way older versions defaulted the top-level domain. Starting up the latest version of named (4.7.2beta) "solved" that problem. Rice appears to be running the old named, so I'd bet Farrell's seeing the same thing. Part of the confusion is that I had assumed that telnet would be using the nameservers I specified in the config file; instead, it was using the "admin host" configured into the kbox, which is running the 2/87 KIP code. Note - NCSA Telnet uses the Name Server specified by the kbox first, unless that number is zero. I had the name "a.ms" in my "config.tel" file. If I opened "a.ms", then everything was fine. If I opened "a", then I got a system bomb. Next I removed the name server lines, and just got "host not in hosts file or on server". So I looked a little closer. The name server is a micro VAX running BSD 4.3, and it has a line in "/etc/hosts" like this: 128.163.128.1 a.ms.uku.edu ukma a If I remove any reference to "a.ms" from my "config.tel" file and open "a.ms.uku.edu", then it's OK.
