this is weird.  that *was* with gnus-uu.el.  I was confused cuz I got the
same result.  I looked in my xemacs dir and see that a whole bunch of my
gnus  .el files are not byte-compiled.   I normally do a "make beta" and
that usually does the "make all-elc".  I just tried that by hand and now
they've byte-compiled. 

I think I'll try a fresh untar & patch up & make beta and see what
happens.
