this doesn't look good:

Compiling /mnt3/xemacs/xemacs-20.3-b11/lisp/tl/char-table.el...
While compiling toplevel forms in file /mnt3/xemacs/xemacs-20.3-b11/lisp/tl/char-table.el:
  !! End of stream ((#<buffer " *Compiler Input*">))
Compiling /mnt3/xemacs/xemacs-20.3-b11/lisp/tl/chartblxmas.el...
While compiling toplevel forms in file /mnt3/xemacs/xemacs-20.3-b11/lisp/tl/chartblxmas.el:
!! End of stream (("internal input stream"))

but other than that, make beta did the "Right Thing". my gnus-*.el files
are byte-compiled this time. must have been some kind of brain damage on
my part mon morn. must have gotten to antsy when I saw those show stopper
bug patches. :-)

It at least explains why gnus was so slow for me! :-)

ok, let's see, filled up my disk again, started up gnus. hmmm, and now, I
can't duplicate the problem. :-P

i'll just attribute it to working on xemas before I had my coffee this
am. :-)
