Vinnie> My experience with this is:

Mark's backtrace is dead code that should never be hit in an XEmacs
session (it gets fset away by `gnus-xmas-redefine'). There was a
persistent bug that lasted through much of the Red Gnus cycle which
caused Red Gnus to incorrectly not call that function at startup.
I've had the workaround I used when this bug was in effect removed
from my startup for quite awhile now.

At any rate, if there is a bug involved here, it is in Gnus not
XEmacs, and I suggest looking for ways that `gnus-xmas-redefine' can
get bypassed at Gnus startup.
