A patch to fix this was already posted to this list.

That's fine.  When a file is supposed to be removed by a patch it is
O.K. to rm it by hand.

Go ahead and ignore that.  I see that half the problem is that I
shouldn't have this file in CVS, so I've taken it out of beta17.

I have no idea how the diagnostic print stuff got in.  When I do a
`cvs diff' of vm-autoload.el against the version in beta16 I see the
lines everyone has been complaining about dropped.
