 I've just verified the correctness of Darrell's theory.  It fails
immediately with the kernel compiled for 586, but succeeds forever
with in compiled for 386.

 Do you know if the same bug is in the K6 CPU's?  I'm thinking about
buying one.  Should I get an Intel instead?
