I have no opinion about News, since starting Gnus isn't a dangerous
activity for a user. Gnus plays well with other news-readers, so is a
good citizen.

All our mail-readers, on the other hand...

Very good idea about removing the Mail icon. I remember when Netscape
first shipped with its mail reader. A colleague called the little mail
icon, "The button that will destroy everyone's Z-Mail."

How many people will hit the Mail button, thinking they are sending
mail?

I would say, if we want to keep it, do it similar to as Anthony
Rossini[1] describes. By default, it tells you that Mail is not
configured. Maybe, it even gives you an option of configuring it, or at
least reading the Info on choosing a Mail system (is there one?).

But really, we shouldn't ship with a toolbar button that destroys a
user's mailbox. That would be like having a button that randomly
rearranges the user's directory structure.

Like you didn't expect to get any, if you didn't ask.
