Bad design, I'd say[1].  jka-compr's place is in Lisp, as much as it
is of ange-ftp/efs.  And surely noone will argue that efs should be
done in C.

In fact, it's neither.  Martin demonstrated that one *can* do it in
Lisp, after all.
