No, but I've been seeing the same problem, and, on a hunch, tried
byte-compiling Gnus with XEmacs 20.3-b22 instead of 19.15.psomething
(just "in case" i ever want/have to read news with 19.15, even though
it hasn't happened yet)...

...and W r magically works.

(or was this already a known thing ?)
