Let me see if I can list all the circumstances under which I've seen
this:

o shell buffers (pretty common, and one of the most annoying places)
o editing files (various modes)
o using precompiled binaries under Solaris 2.5
o using precompiled binaries under Solaris 2.5.1
o compiled myself using gcc
o compiled myself using SunPro 4.0 (and I believe 3.0.1)
o on Solaris 2.5
o on Solaris 2.5.1
o in Gnus
o in VM (I think)
o every version since early 19.13 betas (I think. I'm really not sure
how far this goes back. I'll look back in my e-mail sometime and
see if I can find the first time I reported it).
o on tty over telnet connection
o under CDE when displayed locally
o when run remotely on AIX, IRIX, or DUNIX and displayed locally on
  Solaris (CDE)

Basically it's ubiquitous and unpredictable.

I've tried to keep an eye on what's going on when it happens, but I've
been unable to see a pattern.

One thing I haven't done is try working for a while after starting
with -q to see if it's something in my .emacs. I guess I'm leaning
toward this explanation, since it seems that those of us that see it
see it everywhere, and those that don't just never see it.
