It is clear that something is not kosher with backspace in XEmacs.
For example, in Gnus summary buffers DEL is bound to
gnus-summary-prev-page, and so is BS.  However, pressing `1 DEL'
produces the correct result (which is 1 line scroll), whereas `1 BS'
scrolls 1 page.

GNU Emacs with the same version of Gnus does not exhibit this
behaviour.  Let me stress once more that both keys are bound to the
same function, and that `1 M-x gnus-summary-prev-page', as well as `1
DEL' do the right thing.
