Q&A: WORKSHOP (C/C++, Fortran)
January 1997

 General Questions

Q: Why is Sun continuing to support C++ and Fortran environments with
its aggressive move toward the Java development environment?

A: While Sun is serious about developing the Java environment and
offering developers innovative Java tools, we are also committed to
supporting our installed base of C/C++ and Fortran developers with
top-of-the-line products. By continuing to upgrade the award-winning
Sun WorkShop tools, we are following through on this commitment by
providing developers with the best, most powerful enterprise
 development tools on the market.

Q: What's new in this release of Visual WorkShop C++ and Performance
 WorkShop Fortran?

A: New in both WorkShop products are:

* A new and improved integrated programming environment with
easy-to-use Motif user interfaces from GUI design and code generation
to edit-compile-debug-tune.

* Choice of integrated editors (vi, Xemacs, emacs) - with hyperlinks
for easy editing, error and source browsing, and referencing.

* Data Visualization - the debugger now provides 3D visualization
capability that allows you to observe what happens to your data while
your program executes.

* Extensive On-Line Help - with context help and hyperlinks for easy
navigation.

* Improved C/C++ and Fortran compilers.

* Distributed make to slash build time using the power of the network.

* New capabilities in Visual GUI builder for Visual WorkShop for C++.

* Improved and enhanced performance library for Performance WorkShop
 for Fortran.

Sun WorkShop retains all the powerful existing capabilities like:

	* Fix and Continue - to boost debugging productivity by
allowing you to fix a bug and continue at the same point -
	  without restarting the entire session.

	* Runtime Error Checking - to improve application quality by
catching hard-to-find memory access, leaks, and runtime errors
before an application is put in production.

	* Incremental Linker - to reduce link time of applications,
particularly useful when only small changes are made to very
	  large application.

Q: What's new in the Visual GUI builder for Visual WorkShop for C++?

 A: New additional capabilities:

	* Zero-to-application in seconds with AppGuru

	* GUI testing or problem recreation tools

	* GUI reengineering tool for leveraging existing Motif/Xt GUIs

	* New cross-platform GUI development tools for both Motif and
	  Microsoft Windows GUI applications

 Q. What's new in WorkShop TeamWare?

A: Besides the new Motif user interfaces, we now have distributed make
(dmake) to help developers slash build time by utilizing available
processors distributed over the network. This capability is different
from parallel make in that parallel make can only utilize multiple
processors available on the same host machine for its build.

New Product Line Configuration and Pricing Questions

Q: Why did Sun consolidate its Sun WorkShop product line?

A: In the past, we offered the WorkShop line, Professional line,
compilers, and other a la carte tools. While offering customers great
flexibility in choosing our products, this approach also presented
both customers and resellers with too many choices to consider, and
created confusion. After conducting an extensive analysis of the
market trend toward WorkShop, we were able to determine the tools used
most often by our customers and conveniently packaged them in a
 comprehensive, bundled toolkit.

Q: What are some of the a la carte tools no longer offered
 individually in the new release?

A: While not offered individually, the following tools are included in
Visual WorkShop C++ or Performance WorkShop Fortran:

	* SPARCworks/Visual and SPARCworks/Visual XP (and corresponding
	ProWorks counterparts)

	* SPARCworks (and corresponding ProWorks counterpart)

	* SPARCworks/iMPact (and corresponding ProWorks counterpart)

	* Sun Performance Library

 Upgrades and Trade Up Questions

Q: If I have a customer who bought an a la carte item (such as iMPact,
Visual, Visual XP), how do I get the customer the latest version of
that a la carte item since today there is no longer an a la carte
 product offering?

 A. As you know, most of the a la carte product offerings are no
longer available in this new release. Customers can get these a la
carte products as part of our Visual WorkShop C++ or Performance
 WorkShop Fortran offerings. For example:

	* If the customer is on maintenance contract, he will
automatically receive a license for a new release product which
contains the a la carte item for which the customer had
purchased maintenance. For example, if the customer has Visual
or Visual XP that was purchased as an a la carte, he will
receive a license for Visual WorkShop C++. If the customer has
iMPact, he would receive a license for either Visual WorkShop
	  C++ or Performance WorkShop Fortran.

	* If the customer is not under maintenance contract and does
not have access to a proof of purchase for their a la carte
product, he can purchase a Visual WorkShop C++ or Performance
WorkShop Fortran to get the latest release of their a la carte
	  product(s).

	* If the customer is not under maintenance contract and does
not have access to a proof of purchase for their a la carte, he
can purchase a Visual WorkShop C++ or Performance WorkShop
Fortran to get the latest release of their a la carte.

Q: I have a customer who has purchased many a la carte products in the
past. She wants to use the trade up program to update these old
products to the new ones. How does this work?

A: The trade up program is especially designed for customers who have
purchased a variety of software development products from us in the
past. To participate in the program, the customer must have proof of
purchase for the products she wishes to use in the trade up.

Q: I have a customer who has purchased the C compiler in the past and
wants to get the latest version of the C compiler for this release.
There is no C compiler only offering. How can he do this?

A: This answer also applies to other C++, FORTRAN 77, and Fortran 90
compilers only. There are upgrades available on the price list to the
new compiler bundles - WorkShop Compilers C/C++ and WorkShop Compilers
Fortran. If the customer is not under maintenance contract (where she
would automatically receive licenses for the appropriate compiler
bundles), he can purchase upgrades at a discount for the compiler
 bundles.
