I'm also one of the deprived who don't get inlined GIFs, even though

I just get a clickable button that invokes xv(1). I hate
that. Interestingly enough, I do get inlined GIFs when I look at other
newsgroups, for example, clari.living.comics.bizarro. I just don't see
them in Steven's article in my nnml:xemacs folder.

It was my understanding that a (require 'mime-setup) -- which itself
does a (require 'tm-setup) -- done before loading Gnus-5.4.11 would
suffice. But evidently it doesn't. Just what is the magic incantation?
