I don't see anything unusual on Linux 2 and XFree 3.1.2 and 3.2.
I've seen something similar with mic-paren highlighting, but that's
due to the way I define custom italic and bold-italic fonts.

Are you using identical fonts on both systems?  Do you observe the
same effect if the Linux X server uses the Solaris font directories?
Or conversely, if the Solaris server uses the Linux font directories?
