Well it didn't take me four hours, but I do see Peter's point.
I'm pretty familiar with specifier and it still took me three
tries, and the first two tries elicited an apparently endless
series of warning messages in the *Warnings* buffer.  If you poke
the wrong sort of image into that glyph specifier, woe onto you.
There needs to be a better way.
