Reply-To: turner@lanl.gov

Maybe should have been posted to gnu.emacs.gnus, but maybe this is
fast in not-XEmacs?

Here's how I use Gnus:

o I only regularly read about 4 or 5 groups (OK, maybe 10), but I keep
about 100 at level 3 and use topics to keep things organized.

o The vast majority of groups are at level 9 (stone cold dead).

o I leave about 1000 groups at level 8 (zombies). These are groups I
might want to pop into, and I figure having them at 8 doesn't hurt
things too much. And popping in there should be *much* faster than
  doing A A.

o New groups arrive at level 7. I go in there every now and then and
move them to 3, 8, or (most likely) 9.

OK, so I'm looking at groups at level 3 and I want to see those in 8.
The first time after starting Gnus 5.4 that I do A l 8 it takes
*forever*. OK, not forever. A long time. *Much* longer than 5.2.

Subsequent visits to groups at level 8 are fairly fast.

OK, I just timed it (UltraSPARC 170E)...

Gnus 5.2, first visit: <2 sec
Gnus 5.4, first visit: ~2 *min*
Gnus 5.4, subsequent visits: <2 sec

Just wondering if this is an issue or not.
