The base code for the present version has been around for more than 2
years.  Pretty well done, I would say.  There have been modifications
since then, but not many, and none affecting conceptual issues.

EFS simply hooks itself into the file handler hooks.  I'd be very
surprised if this affected performance;  I personally seem to remember
a performance improvement when I first switched to EFS.  But that also
was about 3 years ago.
