It's a performance hit but I've seen a lot of people who I have talked
into trying Emacs notice "it doesn't even show what column and line
I'm on."  When I show them how to do that it seems like a lot of work
just to get something they have come to expect from lesser editors and
are very quickly unimpressed by Emacs. You have to admit that given
Emacs awesome power its a little plain when it comes up.

I'd vote to make it the default.
