I was a little quick. It seems that this doesn't have to do with 8bit
characters, because highlighting is wildly incorrect in many articles.

If I select an article, it might have no highlighting at all.  The
next time I select it, it could be highlighted, but almost never
exactly where it should be highlighted. Some times the entire followup
is in italics along with the last half line of the quoted article.

Strange, it is.
