I've been told I have early signs of RMI in my right hand, and that it
would be potentially useful to shift mouse use from my right hand to
my left hand. I guess the theory is that two bad hands are better than
one really bad hand :-).

Until now, I never fully grasped how different a world this is. Of
course, one of the first things I thought would make the transition
easier is to move the scrollbar back to the left side. But after
looking through etc/Emacs.ad, I see mention of this. Must I rebuild
with athena or motif scrollbars? I naively tried,

     Emacs*XlwScrollBar*scrollBarPlacement: BOTTOM_LEFT

but that didn't work, and neither did,

     Emacs*XlwScrollBar*scrollBarPlacement: left
