I for one do not find the white glares. Moreover the increases
contrast allows me to use a smaller font. May be we should just a more
off white. A quick non-representive sample of my colleages show that
here they like white.

Isn't it much nicer to have an easy way to select the default color
scheme from the options menu and have the builtin default white again.
That would have been a better solution in my opinion.

I have not much experience with true CDE apps. For things like
configuration widgets, dialog boxes etc I think a nice gray to
distinguishing them buffer windows etc is a good thing. Looking
beyond X (i.e. Windows and Mac) you can see that is exactly what the
majority of users has. White workspaces with gray widgets. Probably
the only grey app they have is their web-browers,
