Oh I fully agree that it is a big architectural advantage (one which I
actually discussed over the phone with RMS once; he didn't see any
point to it).  My amazement comes from the perspective of seeing it go
from being a pipe dream to reality and having a first hand knowledge
of just how much code had to be written and/or modified to make it
work.
