Why should the default be user@domain instead of user@host.domain ?

You will not reach me under "jens@lem.uni-karlsruhe.de", but only under
"jens@lemming0.lem.uni-karlsruhe.de" (or lemmingX... with X from 1 to
6).

And this is not fixable for certain reasons local to our
University. ("lemming0" _is_ the MX entry for all our machines, but
it's a local machine also and just "lem.uni-karlsruhe.de" is used by
our computing center for X500 things...)

So I can make sure that all hosts are reachable if I make their MX
point to lemming0 or, if I have not possibility to change the name
server I can still use sendmail's masquerading features. I dont think
XEmacs itself should remove the hostname.

Or didn't I get this right?
