Just to spoil your day, I thought I'd mention that the very
long-standing bug where subprocess completion isn't reported is still
with us in 20.1b7.  For example, M-x compile doesn't say Compilation
finished at Mon Mar 17 16:19:10 until you kick it, with something like 
C-l.  This is on hpux9.05.  Anyone have any insight into this?
