PLEASE!!!!  TTFC !!!!! [1]

Why don't you just try to use custom? It's so easy
nowadays we have this to set user variables -- look for
[display-time-]ignore-read-mail. 

 
[1] TTFC is an acronym where the first `t' means `try', the second one
   `the' and the `c' means `customize' ... :-)
