I'd rather avoid doing that, for a number of  reasons.  Switching to a
private colormap *does*  cause "colormap flicker"  if you don't have a
lot of hardware  colormaps (my current system has  3, so if you  get 4
colormaps on the  screen, one is always  wonked out).  If you'd rather
have the current 'use closest color', that should be available.  If on
the other hand,  you'd rather use a  private one, that should be there
too.  However, having the program "guess" when to change is probably a
bad idea - consider a colormap that's  temporarily squeezed by an 'xv'
or something.  XEmacs then pops to a private colormap - and there's no
good way to know when it's safe to go *BACK*, so you end up stuck with
colormap thrashing until you leave xemacs (which could be DAYS ;)
