They're basically useless.

What time is it right now, as I'm typing this message?  I know it's
some ungodly hour my local time, but what time is it where you are?
The message headers don't have this information.

I want to hit a key or look on the modeline and see what time it is

I don't want to do the math in my head and I typically don't care when
you sent the message (other than the day, month & year).  In this case
