It is definitely the debug code.

After waiting ages for the page to load:

From a local copy from the .hr site but with the icons direct from
w3.org (why did nobody tell me this is a copy from w3.org,
that one is just a really big fat pipe away :-().

On a Sparcstation 4 (110 Mhz supersparc) with 32 MB

with loading of w3
   182 seconds
without loading w3
   142 seconds

On our Ultra-200 (with for our purposes infinite memory)
   63 seconds
