Not sure what happened, but I can finally use XEmacs 20.1-b10 after
applying the overlay patch (list -> cons).  But there were some
errors, so I'm not sure it was really the solution (though all
evidence points at it (did a number of other things, too, including
backing out to VM 6.17, and then back up, so one only knows).

But I'm happy, since I definitely like 20.1 as my general editing
program...
