Aha, that's the problem, I didn't see the last optional arg (don't try
and debug code after four hours of sleep and getting out of bed 4
hours before you are used to).

Adding the lockfile argument (even though I'm not sure what to do with
it in this case) at least allows the function to work.

However, you don't mean by the above that write-region will be going
away any time soon, do you?  I really depend on the functionality of
jka-compr to allow me to transparently write my compressed mailbox
files.  (See the long and involved discussions in info-vm last week)
