Woops I was confusing you with someone else who was having problems
ONLY on on sunos.... You do however have name resolving problems.

I don't have any linux system here to check, but I seem to remember
that glibc's name resolver code behaves quite differently. Can you
make a small test program (linking with the same libraries especially
glibc) to test wether name resolving works at all
