That's hardly a subtlety.  It was explained to me that one should
reason by the pronounciation: like "formated" should be pronounced as
"formaited" (obviously wrong), but formatted is "OK".

Those are what I meant by subtleties.  You have mentioned signal, but
they are more, like label, travel, etc.

It's probably an Ispell bug, and should be reported as such.  Solaris
`spell' flags `formated' as incorrect.
