In that case it really is a Gnus bug, not a bug in my settings.

Unless Lars fixes it, we must try to ascertain how many people uses
sparse threads, and decide.  If few people use them, great.  But if
many people has the `setq' in their .gnus, `^' command will simply
stop working for them, and they won't like it. :-(

As for Kyle's proposal to revert to an older Gnus minor version, this
is doable, but I am not sure which one we should choose.  The last one
I was using without problems was 5.4.45, but it still had (if I
remember correctly) the syntax-table troubles.  The following and
preceding ones were all having other serious problems, which renders
them infeasible.
