He's right, and this is the action that we will be taking in XEmacs
20.3.

Note his comments about marking changes. I haven't been very strict
about it to date, but I will start coming down on that point during
the 20.3 beta cycle.

There are many aspects to code maintainability in a package the size
of XEmacs other than whether repeated assignment statements line up,
or whether trailing blanks exist in source code.

I've just tried -- for about the fifth time in a couple of years -- to
make sense of and update the mess which is XEmacs' vc.el.

I've given up -- again -- after more than a day's work. It's hopeless.

Here's my proposal: replace vc.el and vc-hooks.el with the latest
FSFmacs versions. Change them exactly enough to make the work
((mark t) and menus is about all you're really need.)
MARK ANY CHANEGS WITH AN "XEmacs" COMMENT!!!

Then TRY AS HARD AS POSSIBLE TO HAVE ANY CHANGES MERGED IN WITH THE
MASTER SOURCE, which comments in the files claim is being maintained
by Andre Spiegel <spiegel@inf.fu-berlin.de>

Ignore Stig.

Release the changed version. If anybody complains about missing
"features", let them reimplement them. (clearcase, etc)

The current situation is worse than a disaster; the XEmacs code is
bit-rotting away to worthlessness, and it is only going to get worse.

Please redistribute to anybody who might be interested, or might have
an -informed- and dissenting opinion.
