Thanks.  However, in the meantime I think I managed to get the thing
working the way I think it should -- at least with internet sockets.

However -- since you're willing to help -- can you please explain how
one is supposed to reach remote hosts?  For example, I am running
XEmacs on machine A, with gnuserv started (internet sockets).  I have
a gnuclient on machine B.  What does the B gnuclient need to do to
tell XEmacs to open a frame on B?

That would be a good idea.  I might work on that, but I'm not sure if
I will have any more time (or the will) to work on it.  Currently it
seems to work /almost/ the way I want it.  It would be kinda
discouraging to start from scratch.

On the other hand, removing various #ifdef-s might prove enlightening, 
too.
