Having sorted out my PNG problems, and then noticing that configure
was ignoring xpm because it was picking up a too-old xpm.h that
happened to be in /usr/local/include/X11 rather than the newer one i'd
put in /usr/local/include, and fixing that, it now configures out of
the box.
