O.K.  I made up a build to match your reported configuration as best I
could and ... I can reproduce it.  Sigh.

All I can say right now is an XEmacs v20 with Athena dialogs does not
display the password, but an XEmacs v20 with Motif dialogs does. :-(
XEmacs 19.15 seems to get it wrong regardless.
