Breaks havoc here too... had to turn it off in configure. We just can't
ask the end user to do that.

Here the libraries in /usr/local/lib are not compatible with the
executable (old32 vs. new32 linking model). The implicit -r/usr/local/lib
turns out to be a _huge_ pain.
