>Bally machines are Indiana Jones and Judge Dread? What are DE, Premier and
>Alvin G's machines?

Here is how last year's tournament worked.

There were 20 Cue Ball Wizards in an area. You pay $5.00 for 2 games, and you
play those 2 games one of the CBW's that is not already being used. To
qualify, all you need is one high score. Each of the 2 games are scored
independently, and you can reenter as often as you liked. To qualify, your
highest score must be one of the top 16 scores. I believe that women and
men all compete together, but there are additional prizes for the top
two women even if they don't make it into the top 16 overall.

What I do not like about this format is that someone with lots of money has an
advantage over others, as they can just keep retrying until they get a score
that is high enough. Compare this to something like IFPA where everyone can
only enter once per division, and if you don't play well, you are out; i.e. you
can't buy your way back in.

Last year, it took about 1B on CBW (extra balls were disabled) to qualify,
and I think the high score was 2.3B. The top 8 go into the A division,
and the positions 9-16 go to the B division. The A division competes for
the top prize (i.e. the pinball machine) while the B division competes
for some other consulation prize. The finals matches were played on
different machines. However, there is no guarantee of which machine
it will be (and you don't know before hand so nobody is spending all day
practicing on it) and you can't be guaranteed it is a new game. For
example, look at the Phoenix Expo where the finals were held on a game
in which the last digit of your score was non-zero!

Unlike IFPA and PAPA, the tournament at the Expo is an added attraction, and
not the primary focus of the expo. Therefore they choose this very simple
format of high single-game score wins. If you are looking for a 'good'
tournament, this is not it. But the expo is great for everything else,
including seeing machines both new and old, some great seminars by some great
people, and a social gathering with all of the big names in pinball.

>By the way, I didn't see anyone mention it so I'll note that according to
>the brochure the winner of the tournament gets a new Alvin G. and Co.
>pinball machine and NOT a DataEast machine as reported several weeks ago by
>several people.

The original advertisements (those given out at IFPA) advertised that
the prize was a Data East machine, and the tour was of the Data East plant.
Now that the tour is of the AG plant, and the winner gets a new AG machine,
I would strongly suspect that the tournament machine is the newest AG machine.
(What is AG's latest release?)
