SATELLITE-RADIO--A few weeks ago we mentioned some of the satellite radio
services available on European satellites. Here is a more complete list of
audio programs available on 11 GHz European satellites.

Eutselsat I F4, also called ECS-4, stations include Cable One in Dutch, RTL
and Radio 10 in German, Sky Radio, Starsat Radio, VOA Europe, BBC World
Service in English and other languages, and Radio Radio.

Sky Radio can also be heard on three transponders on the Astra satellite, and
the BBC World Service is also available on Intelsat VA-F11. Deutschlandfunk
broadcasts through the Intelsat VA-F15. Norwegian Radio's P1 and P2 can be
heard on Eutelsat I F5.

There are also a number of French radio channels on the Telecom 1C satellite,
but these require receiving equipment for 12 GHz. ("Elektronikvaerlden")

SATELLITE-TV--On Friday the Spanish government authorized an ambitious plan
to build three Hispasat satellites, to increase Spain's influence in Latin
America and improve Spain's communications capacity. The television footprint
from the satellites will cover Spain, and most of Latin America and the
United States. The first satellite is to be launched in December 1991, the
second the following April, with the third as a reserve.

The Spanish government wants the system ready in time for the 1992 Summer
Olympics in Barcelona and Seville Expo 92 World's Fair, to commemorate
Christopher Columbus' first voyage to the New World. (Dow Jones-AP)

QSL STATION OF THE YEAR--For the third year in a row, the Swedish DX
Federation has named as "QSL Station of the Year" a shortwave station which
has answered reception reports, even though that station has not
intentionally been broadcasting for listeners abroad. Members of the
federation have awarded the 1988 prize to Radio Impacto in Costa Rico.

The choice is somewhat ironic. Radio Impacto broadcasts programs opposing the
government of neighboring Nicaragua, so it is in fact targeted at an audience
in another country. A few years ago the current chairman of the Swedish DX
Federation, Hermod Pedersen, tried to visit the station, but couldn't get
through the surrounding secrecy and security. (George Wood)

ALBANIA--The English broadcast from Radio Tirana at 21:30 now uses the new
frequency of 7245 kHz instead of 7065. Remaining in parallel are 9480 and
1395 kHz. (Neil Wheatley, U.K.)

AUSTRALIA--According to announcements, test transmissions are to begin from
Radio Australia's new transmitter site in Brandon, Queensland on April 2nd.
The test frequency will be 6020 kHz between 08:00 and 14:00 and from 20:00
until 21:00. (Ralph Brandi, U.S.A.)

CUBA--Here are some extracts from the current schedule of Radio Habana Cuba:
French at 21:00-22:00 on 9540 and 11830 kHz. English at 20:00-21:00 on 11850
kHz and 22:00-23:00 on 9540 kHz. (Tony Legendre, France)

ECUADOR--The English broadcast to Europe at 06:45-08:30 no longer uses 6080
kHz. Frequencies remaining are 9610 and 11835 kHz. The transmission between
16:00 and 16:30 is on the additional frequency of 15115 kHz. (Michael Cobey,
WA U.S.A. and Christopher Williams, U.K.)

FRANCE--Radio France International has announced a 45 per cent increase in
broadcasts to Eastern Europe, i.e. to the Soviet Union, Poland, Romania and
Yugoslavia. (Robert Chear, France and BBC Monitoring)

GREECE--The Voice of Greece now uses a couple of new frequencies during the
broadcast to Europe at 19:00-19:50, 9905 and 11645 kHz. (Mattias Gatzke,
West Germany and Francois Chalory, France)

HUNGARY--Beginning April 15th Trans World Radio in German ("Evangeliums-
rundfunk") will have a daily 5 minute broadcast via Radio Danubius in
Budapest. The time will be 19:55-20:00 and the frequency 102 MHz FM. (Paul
Gager, Austria)

ITALY--Updating SCDX-2037, European Christian Radio will increase transmitter
power in June from 1 to 25 kilowatts. The current schedule on 7335 kHz is for
Eastern European languages weekday 13:30-14:30 and 15:30-16:30, weekends
13:00-14:30 and 15:00-16:30. Programs in English, German and Italian are
broadcast on Sundays only 06:55-10:05. (Paul Gager, Austria)

SEYCHELLES--FEBA is currently using 15325 kHz instead of 9590 kHz during its
English broadcast to South Asia beginning at 15:00. 11870 kHz is in
parallel. (Sajan Soman and N. Ravichandran, India) FEBA has cancelled all
its programs in the Mundari language. Programs in Hindi for India are
broadcast daily at 00:30-01:00 on 7275 and at 02:00-03:00 on 11870 and 15325
kHz. (Gaurab Banerjee, India)

TAIWAN--The Voice of Free China now begins its English transmission to
Europe at 21:57 on the new frequencies of 15440 and 17845 via WYFR relay and
9955 direct from Taiwan. (Christopher Williams, U.K.)

German to Europe from the Voice of Free China is 20:57-21:57 on 9765, 9785,
11850, 15440 and 17845 kHz. For the next transmission period starting in May
two new frequencies will be used: 17450 and 17875 kHz. (Achim Engelhardt,
West Germany)

USA--Updating SCDX-2037, the new Christian Science Monitor station WSHB in
South Carolina is testing as follows:

To North America: 00:00-02:00 on 11980 or 9465 kHz, 02:00-08:00 on 9455,
10:00-14:00 on 9465 or 9495 kHz, 14:00-16:00 on 13760 kHz, 20:00-22:00 on
21640 and 22:00-24:00 on 15205 kHz.

To Australia and South Pacific 08:00-10:00 on 17855 kHz. (William O.
Dickerman, Pennsylvania, USA and Herbert Aichele, West Germany)

Updating SCDX-2031, the new religious broadcaster in New Mexico has the call
sign KJES. It has been reported at different times and on different
frequencies: at 20:16-21:00 on 11730 kHz, at 15:00-18:00 on 15140 kHz and at
23:20-01:00 on 17840 kHz. Their address is 3720 Greenwich Drive, Vado, New
Mexico 88072 USA. (Mark Humenyk, Ontario, Canada)

USSR--Since March 28th all local republican programs are relayed on short
wave for listeners in the Moscow area. Mr Varbanskiy, first deputy chief of
the USSR Ministry of Communications Space and Radio Communications Main
Administration has declared that jamming has terminated and that the
equipment previously used for jamming now is used for relaying republican
programs. (Karel Honzik, Czechoslovakia and BBC Monitoring)

Funds which were freed as a result of eliminating the jamming of foreign
services have been channelled to the construction of four TV stations in
Kirovograd, Zhitomir and Kharkov regions. (BBC Monitoring)

VENEZUELA--Radio Continental, Barinas, has been heard shortly before sign-off
at 03:55 and again at 09:40. The station is listed as inactive in the "World
Radio TV Handbook". (Ralph Brandi)
