SWEDEN--A reminder to listeners in the British Isles. You may not have
noticed, but we now have a transmitter aimed your way for our broadcast at
21:00 hrs. At this time of year medium wave 1179 kHz isn't too useful. So
we've added 11705 kHz at this time. When I was in London a couple of weeks
ago, it was putting in a very nice signal.
The morning sessions of the trial of the man accused of the 1986 murder of
Swedish Prime Minister Olof Palme are being broadcast live nationally on
Swedish Radio, with a short delay so that the name of the defendant can be
bleeped out, whenever mentioned. It's against press rules in Sweden to name
the accused before conviction. Every evening during the trial there's also a
two hour summary of the day's proceedings on national radio.
The local radio station Radio Stockholm is broadcasting ALL of the trial
sessions live, also with a short delay for bleeping, on one of their two
frequencies, 93.8 MHz. They had planned to do it without the bleeps, but that
method was vetoed by the central administration of the Swedish Local Radio

SATELLITE--Western Europe has another direct broadcast satellite. The West
German Kopernicus 1 was successfully launched yesterday from French Guiana.
The same Ariane rocket also carried the Japanese Superbird A
telecommunications satellite.
Sky Television has dropped its lawsuit against the Walt Disney Company
concerning the planned Disney Channel on the Astra satellite. Sky is buying
out Disney's interest in the channel and in Sky Movies, which is already in
operation. According to a statement, Sky Movies will continue to serve as an
outlet for Disney pictures. There's no word about whether there will be a
Disney Channel directed to Europe.
Sky has had problems attracting an audience. There are few British homes
wired for cable, and satellite receivers have been slow arriving in the
shops. It might have been better if Sky had continued broadcasting to
Scandinavia and the Benelux countries, where cable television is much more
widespread, and where there is interest in English-language television.
On the other hand, the Scandinavian satellite channel TV3 has decided to
charge a 50 cent monthly fee per household. That may mean that a number of
cable systems can drop the service, or make it a pay channel.
Meanwhile, TV3 has finally unveiled what it plans to do with its second
channel on the Astra satellite. A new pay-TV service called TV 1000 starts
officially on October 13th. Besides films, it will also carry sports and

AFGHANISTAN--Updating SCDX-2039, Radio Afghanistan in German to Europe at
18:30-19:00 now uses 15510 and 11755 kHz. English at 19:00 is on the same
frequencies while French at 19:30 is on two unconfirmed frequencies of 9635
and 7200 kHz. (BBC Monitoring)
ANGOLA--Radio Nacional in Luanda is shifting slightly between 4950 and 4955
kHz. The short wave schedule is 18:00-16:00 3355, 3375 and 4955, 24 hrs on
7245 and 9535 kHz, 04:00-23:00 on 9720 and 06:00-19:00 on 11955 kHz. 7215 kHz
is inactive.
Emissora Regional da Huila is on 4820 kHz between 04:00 and 23:00. The
Spanish service, "Radio Carina del Sur", is at 17:00-18:00, Mondays-Fridays
on 9565 kHz. Irregularly on Saturdays and Sundays at 07:00-08:00.
After tests on 9700 and 11810 kHz, Emissora Regional de Benguela has returned
to 5040 kHz. Emissora Regional de Lobito is back in the 41 meter band after
tests on around 11815 kHz. Now on 7153 kHz. (WRTH Downlink)
BANGLADESH--Updating SCDX-2034, the external service of Radio Bangladesh to
the Middle East and Europe between 16:00 and 20:00 is back on the old
frequencies of 11510 and 7520 kHz. The languages are Arabic, Bengali and

English is heard at 08:00-08:30 on 17710 and 15195 kHz and at 12:30-13:00 on

BOLIVIA--Updating SCDX-2043, Radio Riberalta is currently heard on 4720
kHz around 0250. (Jose Luis Romero, Uruguay)
DENMARK/NORWAY--As we reported back in SCDX-1990 there are plans for
cooperation between Radio Denmark and Radio Norway. To improve reception of
Radio Denmark the station would use Norwegian transmitters. Radio Denmark has
reached an agreement to rent half the spare time of Radio Norway's
transmitters. As soon as the agreement is approved by the Danish government
transmissions will start, possibly as early as July 1st, but not later than

FRANCE--Radio France International has a new transmission to South East Asia
at 14::00-14:30 on 21780 kHz. (Lau Teck Yew, Singapore) The language of the
broadcast is not mentioned.
GUAM--AWR Asia now uses new 15225 kHz with Mandarin at 20:00. Japanese at

JORDAN--The English service of Radio Jordan now uses new 13655 instead of
11955 kHz to Europe and North America up to 14:15. (BBC Monitoring and DSWCI

KAMPUCHEA/CAMBODIA--The name of the country has changed from Kampuchea to
Cambodia. However the state radio still calls itself "Voice of the People of
Kampuchea" but refers to the country as Cambodia. (Supratik Sanatani, India)
Updating SCDX-2044, French from The Voice of the People of Kampuchea is
broadcast at 00:15-00:30 on 1360 kHz and at 12:15-12:30 on 9695 and 11940
kHz. The Home service in Khmer can be heard on 4910 kHz at 23:00. (C.J.

NORTHERN MARIANA ISLANDS--Updating SCDX-2040, WCSN programs are relayed
weekdays via KYOI in Saipan on a reduced schedule between 10:00 and 14:00 hrs
on 9530 kHz. On weekends the schedule is extended: 02:00-08:00 on 17780 kHz,
08:00-16:00 on 9530, 18:00-22:00 on 9455 and 22:00-02:00 on 15405 kHz.

PANAMA--A contributor who would like to remain anonymous has written to
describe the media situation in Panama. The AFRTS TV stations in the Canal
Zone have been jammed since May 8th, but only during news broadcasts from the
United States. To avoid full scale jamming other newscasts are being aired at
times which are not announced in advance.
On radio, AFRTS Panama and Radio Impacto, in Costa Rica are the only stations
broadcasting up to the minute news from Panama.
The CNN signal is blacked out during news from Panama news the local cable
system is owned by associates of General Noriega. Recently 14 journalists,
including CNN's, have been deported. However some people have satellite TV
receivers and video tape recorders, so newscasts from CNN and Univision are
being passed along to the rest of the city.
There are also personal computer owners who also have fax cards, so
facsimiles of foreign newspapers can be sent by exiles, photocopied, and then
distributed during rallies or sent to computer bulletin boards. According to
human rights groups, people who carry facsimiles have been condemned to one
year in prison for what are described as "crimes against the security of the
state".
Meanwhile Panama's National Media Directorate says that all radio stations
there must broadcast the National Information System network news weekdays
from Radio Nacional. According to the directorate, many stations are failing

SYRIA--Radio Damascus has increased the duration of its broadcasts to Europe
in French and German to one hour. The schedule is now German at 18:00 hrs,
French at 19:00, and English 20:00-21:00 on 9950 and 12085 kHz. (WRTH
Downlink) Furthermore, English from Radio Damascus is also heard at

UNITED KINGDOM--The BBC World Service now broadcasts a second series of
"Mediawatch" programmes every Thursday at 07:30, repeated at 14:45 and 21:30.
USSR--Radio Yerevan is heard daily at 20:30-21:00 on 17680 kHz with programs
in Armenian and five minutes in French around 20:54. Other frequencies
announced but not heard are: 12030, 11920 and 11980 kHz. On Sundays Radio
Yerevan broadcasts at 07:00-08:00 with French at 07:50 on 17680 kHz with

YUGOSLAVIA--Radio Yugoslavia uses the new frequencies of 7215, 9620, 11735
and 15105 kHz during the broadcast at 21:00-2145 to Europe, South Asia, East
