SATELLITE--Western Europe now has another direct broadcast satellite, the
West German TV-SAT 2. This replaces TV-SAT 1, which suffered a breakdown
after being launched into orbit several months ago. (Reuters) 

Europe's first Direct Broadcast Satellite, TV-SAT was launched last
November. It was intended to transmit four TV channels and 16 stereo music
programs. Unfortunately, one of the olar power panels jammed, and the
satellite was written off as a failure. A sister satellite, France's TDF-1,
was successfully launched earlier this year. 

AMATEUR RADIO--A group of radio amateurs in Canada has established a private
transcontinental radio link that makes other networks pale in comparison.
Calling I-PARN, the Interprovincial Amateur Rdio Network, the system is
projected to be a full-time Canada-wide network for both voice and digital
communications.

I-PARN will link ground stations and commercial geostationary satellites
to permit amateurs in any major city in Canada to speak at leisure with heir
counterparts in other population areas, using only a low-powered
walkie-talkie for the 2 meter band. ("73" Magazine)

AFGHANISTAN--Radio Afghanistan is broadacasting in German at 18:30-19:00 hrs
on 9645 kHz. (Serge Olenik, USSR)

BELIGUM--The BRT bradcast in Spanish to South America at 20:30 hrs has a new
frequency of 9925 kHz, replacing 15515. (Jorge J. Garcia, Argentina)

BRAZIL--Updating SCDX-2034, Radio Marumby has moved to 9515 kHz, from 9665.
Heard at 10:30 hrs. (Arthur Cushen's DX World, New Zealand)

CAMBODIA--Since July 29th, the Voice of the People of Kampuchea has been
identifying as the Voice of the People of Cambodia. Heard in English at 12:00
hrs on 11938 kHz. (BBC Monitoring)

CANADA--As of September 29th, Radio Canada International is discontinuing
Broadcasts in German. This coincides with the start of RCI's new service in
Chinese. RCI plans to begin a service in Arabic to the Middle East next

CHINA--Radio Beijing is broadcasting in English to North America: 04:00-05:00
hrs on 11685, 11840, and 15195 kHz; 13:00-15:00 hrs on 11855 kHz; and
03:00-04:00 hrs on 9690, 11715, 15150, and 17855 kHz. English broadcasts to
Europe are: 20:00-22:00 hrs on 9820 and 11500 kHz and 22:00-23:00 hrs on 3985

COLOMBIA--Radaio Nacional, still moving frequencies, has been heard at 22:00
hrs on 17718 kHz. (Arthur Cushen)

CUBA--Radio Havana Cuba is now broadcasting in English at 22:00-23:00 hrs on

FRANCE/JAPAN--Radio France International has changed the time of its
broadcast in Chinese from morning to evening local time. The broadcast is now
at 12:00-12:30 hrs on 15215 kHz, via a transmitter in Yamata, Japan. (F.

WEST GERMANY--Deutsche Welle is now broadcasting in French to Central and
East Africa: 05:15-05:50 hrs on 7225, 9565, 9765, 11765, and 15275 kHz.

IRAN--The External Service of the Vison of the Islamic Republic plans
broadcasts in Western European languages. This follows the introduction of
broadcasts in Arabic, Kurdish, and Turkmen. (BBC Monitoring) There is no

ITALY--The Italian Radio Relay Service, now on 9865 kHz, has signed a
contract with United Nations Radio and UNESCO Radio. The following programs
are being carried, Sundays only: English--07:00 hrs UN Radio "Perspective",
07:45 hrs UNRadio "Scope", 08:00 hrs UNESCO Radio. French--10:30 hrs UNESCO
Radio, 11:00 hrs UN Radio "Perspectives Internationales". Spanish--11:15 hrs
UN Radio "Despacho Semanal".  (IRRS)

NEW ZEALAND--Radio New Zealand International is to use a 100 kW transmitter
to be located at Rangitaiki in the center of the Northern Island. An
additional 100 kW transmitter is to be added at a later date. Operations are
scheduled to begin in January. (Arthur Cushen)

SRI LANKA--Sri Lankan security forces moved into state-run radio and
television stations on July 28th. This followed the killing of the head of
the SLBC, Thevis Guruge, by JVP guerillas on July 23rd. After accusing the
government- owned media of biased reporting, the JVP called on employees of
the radio and television stations to quit or face the consequences. (AFP via

USA--WCSN has changed the frequency at 15:00 hrs from 21640 kHz to 15610 kHz.
(Geoff Williams, England) As indicated in SCDX-2037, this may very well be
the Christian Science Monitor's new transmitter in South Carolina, WSHB,
which has used 21640 kHz. (DX Editor)

UNOFFICIAL RADIO--A station calling itself Radio SNM, the Voice of the Somali
National Movement, has been heard in Somali on 6470 kHz at 15:00-17:00 hrs.
This station carries programs opposing the Somali government. 

Radio Voice of Ethiopian Unity has been heard on 9435 kHz in Amharic at
04:00-05:00 hrs. This station continues to use this frequency at 18:00-20:00
hrs. The Voice of Oromo Liberation also uses 9435 kHz, at 15:30-16:00 hrs.
This transmitter is believed to be located in Sudan, an on July 31st a relay
of Radio Omdurman was heard on 9435 kHz at 14:00-18:00 hrs. (BBC Monitoring)

It has been reported in the press that the recent "congress" of overseas
Chinese students decided to establish a clandestine broadcasting station to
beam news into China. However, an electronic press release issued by the
students on July 29th states that an initiative to postpone debate on the
proposal was adopted by a narrow margin.  Thus, the decision to create the

listeners. Radio Sweden has presented this round-up of radio news, features,
and interviews on Tuesdays since 1948. RS broadcasts to North America: 
  
      15:30 hrs on 17880 and 21610 kHz 
      03:00 hrs on 9695 and 11705 kHz
 
To Europe, Africa, and the Middle East:
  
      15:30 hrs on 21675 kHz (East Africa) 
      17:00 hrs on 1179, 6065, and 9615 kHz
      21:00 hrs on 1179, 9655 and 11705 kHz 

And to Asia and the Pacific:

      12:30 hrs on 17705 and 21610 kHz
      14:00 hrs on 17705 and 21610 kHz
      01:00 hrs on 15390 and 17790 kHz
