BBC MONITORING--On Sunday August 27th, the BBC Monitoring Service celebrated
its 50th birthday. BBC Monitoring started just 5 days before the outbreak of
World War II, and ever since then it's furnished subscribers, including
Sweden Calling DXers, with digests of foreign broadcasts. Today BBC
Monitoring has 350 editors and monitors, who tune in to broadcasts from 33
countries.

After all these years of being Britain's ears, BBC Monitoring has recently
become it's eyes as well, as it moves into satellite TV monitoring.

SATELLITE-TV--America's first purely commercial space flight has put
Britain's first direct broadcast satellite into orbit. The launch from Cape
Canaveral on August 27th, carried the Marco Polo I satellite, better known as
BSB. BSB aims to beam 5 channels of movies, sports, entertainment and news
direct into British homes. But the special flat satellite antennas marketed
for BSB have yet to show up in the shops. BSB was due to go on the air in
September. Because of the delay in marketing reception equipment, the service
is now due to start early next year.

The biggest competition is the already operating Astra satellite, especially
Sky Television's several channels. Unfortunately for Sky, it seems like owner
Rupert Murdoch made a major mistake when he switched to Astra and opened new
channels. Contrary to earlier plans the Astra channels are restricted to
Britain only. Sky had had its largest audience in Scandinavia and the Benelux
countries.

So far, it appears, very few Britons are interested in direct broadcast
television. And the people who want to watch Sky, in Europe, aren't allowed
to.

In Scandinavian satellite-TV news, TV3 has dropped its plan to charge cable
companies for the service, after protests from the cable operators. That
means a planned expansion of programming cannot go forward. However plans for
a pay-TV channel called TV1000, operated by the same company over the Astra
satellite, are going ahead, and broadcasts are to begin on October 13th.

And the Nordic region's own direct broadcast, Tele-X, has its first customer,
although for the data transmission side rather than TV. The Stockholm evening
newspaper Aftonbladet is to use the satellite for communication between
Stockholm and the printers in Gothenburg.

ALBANIA--The external service from Tirana in English is now: at 23:30 on
11825, 9760 and 6085 kHz; 05:30 hrs 9500 and 7300 kHz; 17:30 hrs 9480, 7165
and 1395 kHz; and 21:30 hrs 9480, 7065 and 1395 kHz. (Tom Sundstrom, USA, via
CompuServe)

BHUTAN--Updating SCDX-2030, engineers from All India Radio have installed a
50 kW short wave transmitter which was a gift to the Bhutan Broadcasting
Service from India. The new transmitter uses 9615 kHz during daytime and 6035
kHz at night. (BBC Monitoring)

BRAZIL--Radio Alvorado, Londrina, is back on the air on 3335 kHz. (Aboe Nawan
Thaliep, Indonesia)

CZECHOSLOVAKIA--A new youth network - Radio EM - will come on the air on
September 4th. Its frequencies will be in the FM band and on 1071 kHz medium
wave. Transmission times will be 13:00-21:00. (Lubomir Stejskal,
Czechoslovakia and BBC Monitoring)

FRANCE--RFI in English at 12:45-13:10 is noted on 21645 and the two new
frequencies of 21635 and 17650 kHz. (Joe Hanlon, Pennsylvania, USA via Tom
Sundstrom)

On August 10th, Radio France International was observed with a broadcast in
Standard Chinese for listeners in China at 12:00-12:30 on 15215 kHz. This
transmission appears to replace the 22:00-22:30 broadcast which was
inaugurated on 19th of June. (BBC Monitoring)

INDONESIA--RKPDT1 Jawa Timur on 3000 kHz in inactive but has moved to 700 kHz
medium wave. Broadcasts are at 22:50-01:00 and 10:00-15:15
(Aboe Nawan Thaliep)

JAPAN/GABON--From September 3rd the Radio Japan frequency from Gabon relay
moves from 11800 to 11765 kHz for English at 21:00-21:30 and 23:00-24:00 and
Japanese at 22:00-23:00. (Mogens Jensen, Denmark)

KASHMIR--Since August 13th Radio Kashmir from Leh has been heard testing on
4760 kHz between 11:30 and 16:00 relaying programs in Ladakhi/Kashmiri/Hindi
from medium wave 1053 kHz. Announcements about these test transmissions are
given only at sign on and sign off times in the language of Ladakhi. Reports
can be sent to Superintendent Engineer, Radio Kashmir, Leh-194 101, Jammu and
Kashmir, India. (Kanwarjit Sandhu, India)

PERU--Radio Los Andes now uses the new frequency of 1540 kHz between 11:00
and 02:00. (Aboe Nawan Thaliep)

SINGAPORE--English from the Singapore Broadcasting Corporation is: 22:00-
16:05 (until 18:00 on Fridays, Saturdays and holiday evenings) on 11940 and
5052 kHz. 5010 kHz is used at 22:00-01:00 and 10:00-16:00 daily. (Aboe Nawan
Thaliep)

USA--Trans World Radio recently announced that they will move their
international mission headquarters from the current site at Chatham, New
Jersey to Raleigh, North Carolina in late 1989 or early 1990. The main
reasons for the move were raising labor costs and the high cost of living in
the New Jersey area. (Charles Yarbrough, North Carolina, USA)

VENEZUELA--Ecos del Torbes has reactivated 9640 kHz, observed at 00:40 and
09:05 with better reception than on usual 4980 kHz. (Aboe Nawan Thaliep)

UNOFFICIAL RADIO--The Unita station "A Voz da Resistencia do Galo Negro" has
the following schedule: 05:00-09:00 on 7130 and 9700 kHz, 11:00-14:00 on 9650
and 11820 kHz and 18:00-22:00 on 7130 and 7145 kHz.

The PLO has set up a station in the Sidon area of South Lebanon: "The
Palestine Radio". Transmissions are on 1190 kHz with sign-off at 19:00.

As we reported back in SCDX-2046 Kampuchea should now be called Cambodia,
though the name of the radio station operated by the Khmer Rouge guerillas
still is the Voice of Kampuchea. It can now be heard via a Radio Beijing
relay at 04:00-05:00 on 17680 and 15110 kHz and at 09:00-10:00 on 11870,
11780 and 8345 kHz. At 13:00-14:00 the Beijing frequencies are 9440, 6810 and
6025 kHz and at 23:30-00:30 9440, 8345 and 7350 kHz. (Aboe Nawan Thaliep)

AMATEUR RADIO/SHORT WAVE LISTENING--Updating SCDX-2034, some radio amateurs
in India and South Asia conduct a SWL DX-net on amateur radio every Sunday
03:00-04:00 on 7050 kHz. Tips and loggings from the DX-net are published in a
newsletter. (M. Shannugasundaram, India)
