Shortwave and other electronic media news from Radio Sweden.

This week's bulletin was written by Ingemar Sandberg.

Electronic Edition edited by George Wood.

Packet Radio BID SCDX2061

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

SWEDEN--As with many other stations, there are changes in the Radio Sweden
schedule beginning Sept. 24, 1989. The list at the end of this bulletin
reflects the new English schedule. For the new schedule in other languages,
please contact Radio Sweden.

PROPAGATION--Solar activity has been very high recently so receiving
conditions have not been very favorable.

ANDAMAN ISLANDS--All India Radio has begun broadcasting on shortwave from the
Andaman Islands. These remote islands were mentioned in the Sherlock Holmes
story "The Sign of Four". The frequency is 4760 kHz, and it's been heard from
15:30 hrs, when there was news followed by a commentary in English, until
16:00 hrs when there was an identification in a local language and Indian
music. All India Radio in the Andamans was verified as early as 1963, on
medium wave 1440 kHz. (Arthur Cushen's DX World", New Zealand)

Be careful, since 4760 kHz is also used by All India Radio in Lek, in the
Himalayas, which is on the air from 11:30 to 16:30 hrs. (Radio Netherlands
"Media Network")

BOLIVIA--Both Radio Perla del Acre on 4600 kHz and Radio Riberalta on 4700
kHz have been observed around 24:00 hrs. (Roland Aakesson, "ShortWave
Bulletin", Sweden)

BRAZIL--Radiobras has transferred the control of three radio stations in the
Amazonas region to the government of Amazonas state. These stations are the
mediumwave and tropical band stations in Tabatinga and the mediumwave station
in Tefe. Radiobras now operates seven radio stations considered to be of
strategic value for the country's communication at national and international
levels. (BBC Monitoring)

BURMA--As we've reported before, Burma now calls itself "Myanma" (but the
international community seems to be continuing to say "Burma"). Rangoon has
been renamed Yangon. The broadcasting service now identifies itself "This is
the Voice of Myanma, Yangon". It can still be heard with three daily half
hour transmissions in English, at 02:00 hrs on 7185 kHz, at 07:00 hrs on 9730
kHz, and at 14:30 hrs on 5985 kHz. (Lim Kong Jin, Penang, Malaysia and Arthur
Cushen)

COSTA RICA--Radio Lira International has been heard opening at 11:00 hrs on
the new frequency of 11870 kHz along with the old frequency of 9725 kHz.
(Radio Nederlands "Media Network") This station is listed to broadcast 10:00-
14:15 and 20:30-01:00 hrs on 9725 kHz.

GUAM--The DX program from the Adventist World Radio, compiled in cooperation
with the Australian DX Club, can now be heard Saturdays at 16:30 hrs on 11980
kHz and at 23:30 hrs on 15125 kHz, on Sundays at 02:30 hrs on 11700 kHz and
on Mondays at 10:30 hrs on 13720 kHz. (Lim Kong Jin)

GUATEMALA--Union Radio is on the air 12:00-15:00 and 00:00-02:00 hrs on 5980
kHz. Radio Cultural is scheduled to operate from 10:00-07:30 hrs on 3300 and
5955 kHz. It's been heard here in Europe on 3300 kHz from 03:30 hrs onwards
with fair strength with a Gospel program in English. (Tor-Henrik Ekblom in
"ShortWave Bulletin"; Horst Veit, GDR; and Dario Monferini in "PLAY-DX")

Radio Centri Guatemala is a new unlisted station which has been heard on a
Sunday with a Catholic Gospel Service 06:00-07:00 hrs on 1480 kHz. (Arthur
Cushen)

INDIA--All India Radio in Kurseong can now be heard with news at 15:30 hrs on
3355 kHz now when New Caledonia is off the air. AIR Delhi broadcasts to South
East Asia in English 13:30-15:00 hrs on the unannounced frequency of 11760
kHz in parallel with 9565 and 15335 kHz. Delhi also broadcasts in English to
Australia and New Zealand 10:00-11:00 hrs on 11860 and 15335 kHz and 20:15-
21:30 hrs on 7265, 9550, 9910 and 11715 kHz. (Arthur Cushen)

All India Radio can be heard daily in English 13:30-15:00 hrs on 9560 kHz,
11810 and 15335 kHz are also announced. (Gerald Arrington, California, USA)

JAPAN--The 20:00 hrs transmission in German from Radio Japan can now be heard
practically free from interference on 11835 kHz. The morning transmission in
German at 06:00 hrs is still noted with good strength via the Gabon relay
station on 21690 kHz. The direct broadcast on 21500 kHz can also be heard but
only with a very weak signal. (Peter Andrewitz, West Germany)

These same frequencies are used for French at 06:30-07:00 hrs on 11835 kHz.
There is also a program in French from Radio Japan to the Middle East and
North Africa 19:30-20:00 hrs on 11915 kHz. (Francois Chalory, France)

There is a program in Bengali 15:00-15:30 hrs on 11935 kHz. (Joolekha Begum,
India)

MARSHALL ISLANDS--The station manager of WSZO, Majuro has confirmed that
their short wave transmitter is still unserviceable. They left the air late
in l988 as a result of transmitter problems and a faulty antenna tuning unit.
Replacements are still awaited but the station manager could not give any
estimate when they would be back on shortwave. (Olle Alm, "ShortWave
Bulletin")

NEW CALEDONIA--RFO at Noumea can now be heard 24 hours a day on 666 and 7170
kHz. The outlet on 3355 kHz has now been dropped. (Arthur Cushen)

SRI LANKA--The External Service of the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation is
now on the air as follows: In English--from 00:30 to 04:30 hrs and from 12:30
to 17:30 hrs on 9720 and 15420 kHz to India and on 6005 and 6075 kHz to South
India, from 10:30 to 11:30 hrs on 11835 kHz to Australia. In English and
other languages from 10:30 to 11:30 hrs on 15120 kHz to the Far East and on
17850 kHz to South East Asia.

Trans World Radio, which identifies in English as Radio Wiswa Vani, which is
Hindi for the "Voice of Heaven", is now only operating on 882 kHz mediumwave.
By contract with the Government of Sri Lanka TWR is not allowed to broadcast
in Sinhalese or Tamil. (Maarten van Delft, who has been on vacation in Sri
Lanka)

Updating SCDX-2051, the SLBC service in Tamil for India using the TWR
transmitter on 882 kHz, is now at 11:00-13:45 hrs. (S. Anand, India)

The SLBC has been noted with good strength from around 14:00 hrs until after
15:00 hrs on 11895 kHz, another former TWR frequency. (T. Akabayashi, Japan)

THAILAND--Radio Thailand in Bangkok can be heard from 12:00-12:30 hrs on 9655
kHz with news and comments in English. (Arthur Cushen)

UNOFFICIAL RADIO--The Somali rebel radio, Radio SMN, has announced that they
will cease operation in the 49 meter band, at present on 6321 kHz, and will
move to an unspecified frequency in the 25 meter band in order to improve
reception. The time will remain 15:00-17:00 hrs. (BBC Monitoring)

PUBLICATIONS--We recently asked what has happened to the "International
Listening Guide". Cees van Oudheusden in the Netherlands recently contacted
ILG editor Bernd Friedewald concerning this problem. Bernd's reply was that
he has had difficulties in changing his computer program, and didn't want to
publish until it was perfect. The next ILG will be Sept. 89-March 1990 and
can be expected "about Fall 1989".
